The Story Behind My Most Loved Remix (So Far): I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For – Jazz The DJ Remix

Every music producer has that one track.
The one that just comes together like magic.
The one people keep coming back to.
For me, that’s my unofficial remix of I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For by U2.

Even though it was never officially released, it ended up getting some love from one of my all-time heroes, Robbie Rivera, and was even featured at the end of episode #892 of The Juicy Show.
Here’s the story of how it happened — from pure inspiration to unexpected recognition.

Inspiration: Robbie Rivera and The Promise

Let’s rewind a bit.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Robbie Rivera – if you don’t know him, he’s a legendary DJ and producer from Puerto Rico known for blending house, tribal, and progressive sounds into something uniquely rhythmic and infectious. Think sexy drums, deep basslines, and grooves that feel alive.

One day I stumbled across his track The Promise and… I was instantly hooked. The warm bass, the smooth but driving percussion, the emotional build-up — it had this vibe that was energetic but not overwhelming.

Not too fast. Not too dark. Just… perfect.

And I thought: I want to make something that feels like this.
So the hunt began: I needed the right vocal to match that energy.

Why U2?

It didn’t take long before I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For came to mind.

It’s such a timeless, melancholic track — beautiful in its simplicity, soulful in its message.
But I wondered: What if I flipped the mood? What if I made it feel hopeful, uplifting, like a journey with a destination?

That was the spark.

I found a decent-quality acapella version on YouTube and got to work.

Building the Track in Ableton Live

I fired up Ableton Live, with The Promise as a sonic reference. I didn’t want to copy it — just channel its spirit.

Step by step:

  • First came the drums — punchy, housey, but not too aggressive.
  • Then the bassline, which had to be warm, rolling, and groovy — something that would carry the track without overpowering the vocals.
  • I experimented with vocal chops, slicing the acapella and rearranging it into a kind of post-chorus hook. This gave the remix more of a club feel without losing the emotional core.
  • Then came the piano chords — classic piano-house style, bright and uplifting.
  • I added some effects and transitions to glue everything together, and suddenly the track started to breathe on its own.

The Message Behind the Remix

More than just a dance track, I wanted this remix to transform the original message — from longing to hope, from searching to almost there.
Same lyrics, different perspective.

It’s amazing how a few musical changes can shift the entire emotional weight of a song.

The Robbie Rivera Moment

Once the remix was done, I was proud of it. So I took a chance.

I reached out to Robbie Rivera on Instagram, just to let him know that The Promise had inspired this remix, and I sent him a quick clip.

His reply?

“Wow! I love it. Can you email me to download?”

I couldn’t believe it. I literally read it three times just to make sure it wasn’t some kind of prank.
I sent him the full track, and a few days later… boom.

My remix was the closing track of The Juicy Show episode #892.
A total dream come true.

Three Years Later…

It’s been over three years now, and this remix is still my most played and appreciated track on SoundCloud.
People DM me about it. DJs ask for a download link.
And every time I listen to it again, I remember why I started making music in the first place.

Not for the numbers.
Not for the clout.
But for that feeling.

Of turning something you love into something new.
Of connecting with others — even your heroes — through a shared passion.

Thanks for reading.
